Digital platforms and labor precarization in Brazil
historical transformations, algorithmic control, and regulatory challenges

This article analyzes the precarization of platform-mediated work in Brazil by articulating social history of labor, contemporary economic sociology, and digital labor theory. Drawing on Thompsonian categories of experience and moral economy in dialogue with the literature on platform capitalism (Srnicek), surveillance capitalism (Zuboff), and the platform society (van Dijck, Poell, de Waal), it examines how the expansion of companies such as Uber, iFood, and Rappi articulates technological innovation with the intensification of labor exploitation. The argument departs from the historical formation of labor protection in Brazil, traverses the neoliberal restructuring of recent decades, and incorporates empirical data from PNAD Contínua (IBGE, 2024) and IPEA studies to measure the platformization phenomenon. It argues that algorithmic management constitutes a renewed form of subsumption of labor under capital, which violates historically constructed expectations of dignity and protection.
